What lies below – Ottawa Screening

Ottawa’s Mayfair TheatRE to screen critically-acclaimed film “What Lies Below”

Created by blind Local Angler and Activist Lawrence Gunther

(Ottawa) Blue Fish Canada, Ottawa Riverkeeper, Oceana Canada, Just Fishing,  and Fish-Hawk.net are pleased to take part in a special screening of Ottawa film creator Lawrence Gunther’s wave-breaking documentary, “What Lies Below”, Wednesday April 26th at Ottawa’s

Mayfair Theatre (doors open at 6:00 p.m.)

An 80-minute film, “What Lies Below” presents ten Canadian water quality and fish health stories as revealed by Gunther and his guide dog to document the traditions, concerns, hopes and actions of local and indigenous  people who live by and from the water. First up is the Ottawa River as told by local Musky fishing guide John Anderson.

Having premiered October 2016 as the closing film at Planet in Focus Film Festival at Toronto’s Hot docs Theatre, What Lies Below now features at numerous Canadian and international festivals, and is soon to air on both CBC’s Documentary Channel and AMI TV.

Drawing on his Masters in Environmental  Studies and extensive commercial and professional tournament fishing experience to create What Lies Below, Lawrence Gunther is also the founder of Blue Fish Canada — a charity dedicated to the future of fish and fishing, and host of the popular podcast series, Blue Fish Radio.

“People view rivers, lakes and oceans as convenient spaces for the disposal of organic waste, but our discards are no longer benign; we need to stop thinking out-of-sight is out-of-mind, and instead start using non-visual information, local and indigenous knowledge, and sound science to re-establish healthy relationships with our unseen aquatic and marine ecosystems.”

Lawrence Gunther (Film Creator – What Lies Below.)

“Canadians might look at our large watershed with our glorious and countless lakes and rivers and think that our water issues are not urgent. It takes a special person to see how fragile these miracles of nature really are and how they need stewardship and protection so generations beyond ours can enjoy them and be sustained by them.”

Meredith Brown, Riverkeeper

MC of the post-screening Q/A is Ottawa’s own “Big” Jim McLaughlin. Panel members include Meredith Brown from Ottawa Riverkeeper, Kim Elmslie from Oceana Canada, Rob Jackson from Fish-Hawk.net, and Lawrence Gunther and his guide dog Moby.

An informal post-screening meet-and-greet will be held at “Barley Mow” restaurant located next to the Mayfair Theatre.
